Our Come Soar classes are dynamic, engaging, and most importantly, FUN! We use poems, stories, creative props, and music along with an introduction to dance technique basics.

Elementary I & II
Our Elementary I and II classes encourage students, of 7+ years of age, to bring their curiosity and imagination with them as they begin exploring classical ballet.
Level | Time | Monthly Tuition |
---|---|---|
Elementary I | Wednesday 4:45 - 6:00pm | $102 (one class per week) |

Elementary I & II classes create a strong foundation for ballet technique as dancers gain strength and develop control of the correct muscles to master the physicality and art of ballet.
In addition to being an exciting way to build coordination, body awareness, and muscle strength, our program provides a positive outlet to have fun, express emotion, and foster confidence.
In Elementary I, students choose between one or two classes per week, and is a 2-year minimum curriculum based on the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) Grades 1 and 2 syllabi.
The 2-year curriculum for Elementary II is based on the RAD Grades 3 and 4 syllabi. Musicality and performance can now be studied more in-depth and foot, ankle, core, and back strength are stressed as students prepare for pointe work.
For students who wish to be considered for pointe shoes in Intermediate I, students will need to attend two classes per week for their two years in Elementary II with an attendance record of 90% or better. Elementary II students in their first year are encouraged to attend Summer Dance Camp while those in their second year and who are about to join Intermediate I are expected to attend at least two weeks of camp.

Classwork becomes more challenging at these levels, and we still have a lot of fun as we continue to focus on building confidence in connection to their skill development and dedication. Students are encouraged to understand the performance art of ballet, and we foster an environment where they can consistently apply their skills around musicality and interpretation. We also continue to focus on strength development because it is so critical for their pointe work and safety. Dancers learn to work with their peers to gain experience dancing as a core unit, or corps de ballet.
At SCD, safety is one of our highest priorities. At this level, as the technique becomes more demanding and pointe work is introduced and developed, we do have a number of requirements to make sure that your student is safe and their body and movement is being nurtured for a lifetime of health. With this is mind, we have minimum age requirements of 11 years (Intermediate I) and 13 years (Intermediate II).
Students wishing to dance on pointe are required to attend three ballet classes each week with an attendance record of 90% or better. Students can expect to spend a minimum of two years of training at each level in order to master the movement vocabulary of the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) Grades 5 and 6 and Intermediate Foundation syllabi as well as the foundational training for pointe work in Intermediate I and RAD Grade 7, Intermediate, and Advanced Foundation syllabi in Intermediate II. Some students may spend more than two years should the teaching staff feel that is what would best serve the overall development of the dancer. The two-year minimum is usually met by those who consistently attend at least three (and usually more) classes each week.
Intermediate II students who would like to progress to the Advanced level are expected to attend four classes each week for a minimum of two years, preferably with at least three of them at the Intermediate II level and with an attendance record of 90% or better.
Students at this level might attend a summer intensive outside of Sonoma, which can be used to supplement SCD's dance camps or as an alternative to them. Intermediate I students in their first year are expected to attend at least two weeks of Summer Dance Camp, and those in their second year or who are about to join Intermediate II are expected to attend at least three weeks of camp. All Intermediate II dancers are expected to attend at least three weeks of Summer Dance Camp or equivalent. Students who have an interest in pursuing dance professionally and/or dancing in college are strongly encouraged to attend summer intensives associated with ballet or dance companies.

The program allows for individuals to assess and work on their distinct strengths and goals. They continue to work with peers to gain experience dancing as a core unit, or corps de ballet, as well as dancing leading roles in our twice-yearly productions. Students also continue to explore their personal responses to music and choreography to encourage the unique development of each dancer.
